ISO 14001 is the internationally accepted standard for Environmental Management Systems (EMS). FST's EMS is a management tool designed to evaluate the organisation's environmental impacts. It provides a structured approach to environmental protection. It also monitors environmental performance and integrates environmental management into the company's daily operations, long-term planning and quality management systems.

There is increasing pressure from both government and consumers for all businesses to show they are reducing their environmental impact. Organisations of all sizes are beginning to understand that investment in environmental sustainability is an investment in their own strategic assets.
FST work closely with our clients to address the delicate balance between reducing environmental impact and maintaining our client's profitability. We work hard to ensure our clients' communications generate significant return on investment, whilst being as environmentally friendly as possible.
FST recognises that, while our business generates a relatively small amount of pollution, the nature of the services we provide do result in an overall impact, which we can reduce, thereby improving the quality of the environment.
In 2004, FST established an Environmental Management System, with the assistance of National Quality Assurance Limited. This initiative led to FST receiving the ISO 14001 certification in May 2005. ISO 14001 allowed FST to realise environmental and financial gains, whilst demonstrating to staff, customers and suppliers that FST manages its business in an environmentally responsible manner.
Our four main environmental objectives are: Energy Efficiency, Waste Minimisation and Management, Communication to Customers and Environmental Training. Furthermore we are striving to continually improve our environmental performance through:
FST is currently working with the Carbon Trust and BEP (Business Environment Partnership) to measure the carbon impact of various forms of customer communications, including printed documents, emails and SMS. This wide ranging project will develop a true "cradle-to-grave" carbon score for all the different components of the communication process.
The resulting data will allow FST to compare the carbon footprint of our document processes with those undertaken by companies in-house and help them develop the most environmentally friendly mix of print and electronic customer communications. The results will be published on this site in the coming months.
